Mediterranean Gull

Mediterranean Gull, Dunkirk, 1st May 2024 © Tony Martin

'There are now two med gull pairs nesting within 2m of each other on the scrape island nearest to my hide, and they look established, so I'm expecting photo opportunities to be good until the vegetation conceals them before long. Interestingly, one bird in each pair has a yellow tip to the beak, and in an attempted copulation yesterday I noted that the upper bird had the yellow tip. Small sample size, but I do wonder if this is a breeding season sexual difference. I found reference to the yellow tip at one place online (see image below), but nothing about it being sex-linked. https://gull-research.org/melanos/med03cy.html' TM
