Mediterranean Gull

Mediterranean Gull, Dunkirk, 29th June 2014 © Tony Martin
'To my delight and surprise, today I caught sight of one of the two Med gull chicks which hatched here this season. It is clearly capable of flying. The photos are from more than 100m, but I rather think they are the first of a Med gull known to hatch in Cambs. According to Louise Bacon, the species has not been recorded as successfully breeding in the county previously. Winds of change and all that.
I'm also attaching a photo of the nest on May 18th. The third egg did hatch, but that chick was dead of unknown causes 3 weeks later. The two chicks alive at 3 weeks were each given a yellow colour ring as part of the UK-wide Med gull CR scheme
