Slavonian Grebe
Slavonian Grebe, Grafham Water, 9th February 2010 © David H Hatton Kowapower.com
'This record shot, a composite of three proves that they can fly. Useful pointers are the Auk-like jizz, restricted white 'speculum' in the rear wing (extensive in BN Grebe), the white 'thumb-mark' in the forewing (absent in BNG) and the forward-tilting black 'beret' cap (extensive in BNG). Red-necked Grebe is superficially similsr in wing pattern to Slavonian Grebe but noticeably larger, rather hump-backed and with a greyer less contrasting neck and head pattern' DHH
